| More About This Product: |
| Tonfisk Design originates from Finland, a land of 188,000 lakes and with one of the lowest population densities in the world. Having more than a third of its land mass within the Arctic Circle, much of Finland retains a rugged untainted atmosphere.
It was in Finland where Tony Alfström (1972 Finland) and Brian Keaney (1974 Ireland) met while studying for their Master's Degrees at the University of Art & Design in Helsinki. They were drawn together by their common interest in exploring and developing new ideas. Having visited the Ambiente consumer goods trade fair in Frankfurt, they were left disillusioned by the lack of truly creative while commercial design in the tableware sector.
The strong belief that there existed a gap in the market for innovative tableware formed the idea of establishing a company. Finally on December 17th 1999 Tonfisk Design Ltd. was founded in Helsinki to bring forward an ideology of creating new ideas without sacrificing values like clarity, functionality and personality. The founders raise their glasses filled with smooth and mellow Finnish vodka to mark that day every year.
The first products were made in a run down industrial space at Lemuntie (Stinky Road) in Helsinki. In the spring 2000 Tonfisk launched internationally at Ambiente. The small Finnish design company immediately caused a stir among visitors and media and has since been featured extensively in the international press. Tonfisk's WARM tea set combining ceramics and wood became one of the year's trend objects that year reaching design aficionados through prominent interior design shops world wide.
Today the company is located in the suburbs of Helsinki, providing a new generation of Finnish design products for a global audience.
