Art meets innovation in Toikka’s 2009 annual creation, Raquel. The stunning white bird is animated by a delicate tracery-like pattern of brown markings. Oddly enough, these markings are the result of an accident; workers at the Nuutajarvi glass factory noticed that dirt in the molds was responsible for leaving these spectacular marks. Toikka, being the innovator he is, decided to make these marks a part of his next glass creation. The look of the bird is achieved through the use of a spikey mold, which contains flecks of dirt. When the glass is removed from the mold, the dirt runs and leaves behind the distinctive pattern.
Raquel’s posture is one of roosting. Her feet are tucked under her body and her head is lifted proudly. Her beak and tail are made of mottled brown and white glass, which provide a nice counterpoint to her primarily white body. A tour de force in glass, this Toikka bird is a great addition to any Toikka bird collection.
