iittala Tapio

Designed by Tapio Wirkkala for iittala in 1952, Tapio was the winner of the Grand Prix Award at the 1954 Milan Triennale. Using his mastery and command of glass-blowing, Wirkkala suspends a single air bubble inside the weighted stem of each glass. This iconic bubbled glass represents Wirkkala's incomparable signature style.

Tapio Wirkkala’s style is considered to be synonymous with Finnish design. He served for many years as the artistic director of the University of Arts and Design in Helsinki and has produced over 400 designs for iittala, creating a catalog of works that showcase his continual technical advances.

About the designer: Tapio Wirkkala

(1915-1985) Born in Hanko, Finland. Tapio Wirkkala is known as the versatile genius of design. His contribution to design in-cludes everything from glass products to the design of banknotes and graphic art. During his career, Wirkkala has participated in many interntional exhibitions, as well as being the artistic director of the University of Arts and Design in Helsinki for many years. He has won a large number of awards, including three gold medals at the Triennale in Milan in 1951, followed by another three in 1954.
