Designed by Tapio Wirkkala for iittala in 1952, Tapio was the winner of the Grand Prix Award at the 1954 Milan Triennale. Using his mastery and command of glass-blowing, Wirkkala suspends a single air bubble inside the weighted stem of each glass. This iconic bubbled glass represents Wirkkala's incomparable signature style.
Tapio Wirkkala’s style is considered to be synonymous with Finnish design. He served for many years as the artistic director of the University of Arts and Design in Helsinki and has produced over 400 designs for iittala, creating a catalog of works that showcases continual technical advances as well as the power natural phenomenon inspires his craft.
The stopper of the Tapio decanter is a solid piece of glass that features the signature "Tapio bubble."
