This common bird assumes a new grace in the hands of artist Oiva Toikka. Named for the male’s bright red shoulders, the Red Winged Blackbird is a well known sight throughout North and Central America. In Toikka’s rendition, the bird is given a smooth black body and bright red blotches for wings. It is a subtle yet beautiful combination with the bold red offsetting the rich black.
Like all iittala birds, the Red Winged Blackbird was mouth blown at the Nuutajarvi glass factory in Finland. It bears Oiva Toikka’s hand etched signature and the edition number on its base.
