iittala Gaissa

Designed by Tapio Wirkkala in 1973, iittala Gaissa glassware has distinctively rocky and knobby bases and thin walls that mirror the lucid qualities of ice.

Considered a master of Finnish design, Wirkkala’s themes come from his observations of nature. Natural phenomena such as ice formations or the movements of water serve as inspirations for his work.

Getting its moniker from a fell covered perpetually by snow, Gaissa is organic glassware that powerfully illustrates Wirkalla’s mastery and command of blown glass and the powerful force that the arctic serves as his inspiration.

About the designer: Tapio Wirkkala

(1915-1985) Born in Hanko, Finland. Tapio Wirkkala is known as the versatile genius of design. His contribution to design in-cludes everything from glass products to the design of banknotes and graphic art. During his career, Wirkkala has participated in many interntional exhibitions, as well as being the artistic director of the University of Arts and Design in Helsinki for many years. He has won a large number of awards, including three gold medals at the Triennale in Milan in 1951, followed by another three in 1954.
