| More About This Product: |
| The aarikka product range today runs to over 400 items, from jewelry to giftware, but it all began 50 years ago with buttons. In 1954 Kaija Aarikka was about to qualify as a textile designer and needed some showy buttons for the suit she had designed for her final assignment. When she failed to find anything suitable on the market, she decided there was nothing for it but to make her own. At that time buttons were a very important fashion feature, but even so she was surprised that her five were such a great hit. That very same year she and her husband, Erkki Ruokonen, decided to found a company of their own, and to call it Aarikka Oy. The company´s first sales outlet, a tiny but elegant shop in Helsinki, was called Nappi-Aarikka. Meaning Button Aarikka.
From showy buttons it was but a short step to jewelry combining precious woods with silver. The young and innovative designer taught the Finns to appreciate their native birch, proving to them that it is, if beautifully moulded, a material suitable for jewelry.
Customers gasped in delight at the household goods designed by Kaija Aarikka. Utility and decorative ware by Aarikka became popular as gifts. Candlesticks, mobiles and room dividers found their way into Finnish homes and aarikka products on nature themes made perfect souvenirs of Finland.
This talented designer and her products have always been international demand. aarikka products have represented Finnish design at countless trade fairs the world over. Major export areas outside Europe are the United States and Japan. At home in Finland aarikka customers are served by 16 exclusive aarikka stores and 300 retailers.
aarikka has remained a family business that trusts in distinctive design. Now, after fifty successful years, the artistic management of the company has been passed on to Kaija´s daughter Pauliina Aarikka, who is, with her design team, responsible for the new products designed in the spirit of aarikka.
